Acupuncture can treat Iritis ( Irisitis):

Acupuncture can treat Iritis ( Irisitis):

A patient came to our clinic in early July for eye acupuncture treatment for iritis. One month after treatment, she returned for a follow-up visit with a Western doctor and reported improvement in both intraocular pressure and inflammation.

Iritis, also known as iritis or acute anterior uveitis, is an inflammatory disease of the eye that primarily affects the iris (the colored part surrounding the pupil) and the ciliary body (the muscle responsible for adjusting the eye's focus). While the cause of most cases of iritis is unknown, the following factors may be involved:

1. Autoimmune diseases: Many cases of iritis are associated with autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. These diseases cause the body's immune system to attack its own tissues, including the iris and ciliary body.

2. Infections: Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections can also trigger iritis, especially in those with weakened immune systems. /

Symptoms of iritis:

1. Red and swollen eyes

2. Eye pain or discomfort

3. Photophobia

4. Blurred vision

5. Pupil may become smaller or adhere to the lens

6. Increased intraocular pressure

7. Floaters

Western medicine treatment:

The first-line treatment is a combination of steroids and mydriatics. Steroids are administered via topical, oral, or intracameral injection. Their goal is to quickly suppress the inflammatory response. Mydriatics are used to prevent the iris from becoming adhered to the cornea or posteriorly to the lens during recurrent inflammation.

Iritis medications primarily include steroids and immunomodulators, both of which have side effects.

1. Steroids may cause increased intraocular pressure, elevated blood sugar, sleep disturbances, osteoporosis, and other eye side effects such as increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma. 2. Immunomodulators may cause nausea, vomiting, lip ulcers, anemia, itchy skin, reduced immunity, and increased risk of infection. Immunomodulators may also have side effects on the liver and kidneys (particularly caution is advised with long-term or high-dose use, and liver and kidney function should be monitored regularly).

Acupuncture for Iritis:

The iris tissue of the eye is a common site for immune complex deposition. Immune complex deposition in this tissue triggers an inflammatory response, and slow clearance of these immune complexes is a major cause of endogenous iritis. Acupuncture can activate blood vessels (increase blood flow) and increase blood vessel wall permeability, allowing medication to enter and immune complexes to be rapidly excreted, reducing eye inflammation and improving iritis./

Acupuncture Points for Iritis:

Acupuncture points include Jingming, Yuyao, Zanzhu, Sizhukong, Chengqi, Taiyang, and Sibai. These points can promote blood circulation around the eye, reduce inflammation, lower intraocular pressure, relax eye muscles, and relieve eye discomfort.

What conditions can be treated with eye acupuncture?

1. Iritis

2. Myopia Commonly used to treat pseudomyopia in children.

3. Retinal diseases, such as macular degeneration.

4. Dry eyes. Acupuncture can activate Qi and blood circulation and dredge the meridians to moisten the eyes.

5. Eye fatigue

6. Blurred vision

7. High intraocular pressure
