The patient sought treatment for lower back pain, chest pain, and tightness associated with scoliosis. He had experienced back pain, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing for over 5.6 years, and after receiving treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine, his condition significantly improved.

What is scoliosis?

The spine is the central skeleton that supports the body and normally appears straight when viewed from the front. When the spine curves sideways and rotates, it is called scoliosis.

It is common in adolescents experiencing rapid growth, but it can also occur in adults due to degeneration or long-term poor posture.

What causes lower back pain?

• Muscle imbalance: Excessive tension on one side and excessive stretching on the other side lead to pain.

• Joint pressure: Uneven stress on intervertebral joints accelerates wear and causes discomfort.

• Nerve compression: Severe scoliosis can compress nerves and cause lower back pain or numbness in the lower limbs. • Postural compensation: To maintain balance, the pelvis and hip joints shift, increasing the burden on the lower back.

Common Symptoms

• Lower back pain and stiffness

• Worsened by prolonged sitting or standing

• Unilateral lower back or shoulder fatigue

• Radiating pain or numbness in the lower limbs in severe cases

Improvement and Maintenance Methods

1. Regular exercise

Core muscle training (planks, bridges) improves spinal stability.

Swimming, brisk walking, and stretching help balance muscles.

2. Maintaining Correct Posture

Avoid slouching or crossing your legs for extended periods.

Sit with your back supported and the screen level with your eyes.

3. Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Stretching and strengthening exercises improve muscle imbalances.

4. Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatments

Acupuncture and massage: Promote qi and blood circulation and relax tense muscles.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medicinal Diet: Replenish qi and blood circulation, relax tendons and unblock meridians.

Commonly used acupoints in Traditional Chinese Medicine:

• Yaoyangguan (Du Meridian): Located in the depression below the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra. Relaxes the muscles and tendons, activating blood circulation and relieving lower back pain.

• Shenshu (Urinary Bladder Meridian): Located 1.5 inches lateral to the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra. Strengthens the kidneys and lower back.

• Dachangshu (Urinary Bladder Meridian): Located 1.5 inches lateral to the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra. Unblocks the meridians.

• Weizhong (Urinary Bladder Meridian): Located at the midpoint of the knee pit. Promotes blood circulation and relieves acute lower back pain.

• Zusanli (Stomach Meridian): Located 3 inches below the knee, one finger width on the outside of the tibia. Regulates qi and blood.

• Yanglingquan (Gallbladder Meridian): Located in front of and below the head of the fibula on the outside of the lower leg. Relaxes the muscles and tendons.

When should I see a doctor? • Lower back pain persists for more than two weeks without improvement

• Lower limb numbness, weakness, or abnormal bowel movements

• Rapid worsening of scoliosis
