After two months of Chinese medicine and acupuncture treatment, the patient's constipation, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure all improved.
The following two images are the patient's handwritten blood pressure log.

Constipation and High Blood Pressure:
Constipation can increase blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Excessive straining during bowel movements accelerates heart contractions, causing a rapid increase in blood pressure, which can strain the heart and potentially trigger a myocardial infarction or stroke. Stress and emotions are also major contributors to high blood pressure. Stress, anger, and anxiety can cause sympathetic nerve contraction, leading to an increase in blood pressure.
Why does constipation cause high blood pressure?
When constipated people strain during bowel movements, abdominal pressure increases, causing a sudden spike in blood pressure. Long-term constipation increases the risk of heart disease and stroke in people with hypertension.
How can I improve constipation and stabilize my blood pressure?
1. Increase dietary fiber intake:
Eating more foods rich in dietary fiber, such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, helps maintain smooth bowel movements and stabilizes blood pressure.
2. A balanced diet:
A balanced diet should include both coarse and fine foods. Avoid over-refined foods. Consume adequate whole grains and legumes, and eat fruit in moderation, but avoid excessive amounts to prevent indigestion.
3. Drink enough water:
Maintaining adequate hydration helps soften stool and promote intestinal motility.
4. Exercise regularly:
Regular exercise boosts metabolism, improves gastrointestinal function, and helps prevent constipation.
5. Be aware of the side effects of high blood pressure medications:
Some high blood pressure medications (such as calcium channel blockers) may affect intestinal motility and cause constipation. If you have any concerns, consult a doctor.
Western medications that may cause constipation:
1. Cough suppressants and opioid analgesics: Such as codeine and morphine, which can dry out stool.
2. Antacids: Stomach medications containing calcium or aluminum may cause stool to remain in the intestines longer, allowing water to be absorbed and leading to constipation.
3. Antihypertensive medications: Some calcium channel blockers (such as verapamil) relax vascular smooth muscle, but they may also slow intestinal motility.
4. Antihistamines: Medications commonly used for colds and allergies can slow smooth muscle motility.
5. Antidepressants and antipsychotics: They may cause decreased intestinal motility, bloating, and constipation.
6. Iron supplements: Commonly used to treat anemia, they may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, leading to bloating and constipation.
7. Diuretics: Reduce body water content, potentially leading to insufficient stool moisture and constipation.
